Rani Kumudini Devi started the Sivananda Rehabilitation Home (SRH), inspired by her spiritual preceptor, Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, to care for destitute leprosy affected persons and to rehabilitate them. About 50-60 patients were taken in by SRH.

Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Vengala Rao handed over to SRH the responsibility of taking care of nearly 900 patients from the leprosy home run by the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad. Cottages for their housing were built and two sick wards with 20 beds were established. A laboratory, a physiotherapy department and a footwear section were also started.

Training for leprosy patients soon started to enable them to earn a living and more importantly regain a sense of dignity and self-worth. The patients were trained in weaving, candle making, and basket making.

The Archbishop of Hyderabad, M. Arulappa, while on a visit to Germany met members of German Leprosy Relief Association (GLRA), which was funding anti leprosy projects across the world. He spoke highly of SRH's efforts in the field of leprosy and recommended that they support SRH. A team from GLRA visited SRH in 1978 and agreed to fund SRH's activities, starting with an Urban Leprosy Control Project to survey and detect early cases of leprosy and provide prompt treatment to people living in the slums of Hyderabad.

A Safety Matches unit was established under the name 'Chetana'.

The Urban Leprosy Control Project was started with about 20 paramedical personnel and a medical officer. Initially the government allotted about 0.5 million of population for the survey, which was later increased to 1.5 million by 1987. More than 11,000 patients were detected and treated by SRH. The prevalence of the disease was 90/10,000 which was reduced to 0.6/10,000 by 2003. The programme was discontinued as SRH had reached the criteria imposed by the WHO of reduction of infection to less than 1/10,000. (Elimination)

Pleased with the developments of SRH, GLRA agreed to sanction a referral hospital and also to make available the services of Dr. August Otto Beine, MD, an orthopedic surgeon.

Construction of a water tank with a capacity of 15,000 gallons was proposed and built on the campus.

SRH conducted a collaborative study with the National Institution of Medical Research, London on the effect of immunization with armadillo derived vaccine developed by the UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special programme. The aim of the study was to stimulate the body's immunization against leprosy and examine the effects.

The work for providing electricity to all the cottages was started.

The girl's hostel and the Old Age Home were inaugurated by Mr. Sushil Kumar, IAS (Principal Secretary, Industries, Govt of AP) and Mr. Sankaran (Principal Secretary, Social Welfare, Govt of AP).

The foundation stone for the Twilight Ward for Gents was laid by Prince Muffakkham Jah on 05 Jan 1985.

A 200 bedded referral hospital in the campus was inaugurated on 05 Feb 1985 by Mr.Alois Poschmann Schaizmeister of GLRA which funded the construction. Till date the hospital has been receiving financial grant from GLRA for the maintenance. It has facilities for reconstructive surgery, physiotherapy, x-ray, clinical laboratories, orthopaedic and cobblery workshops. The hospital is referred for treatment of complicated cases from around the country.

A separate dormitory building was constructed exclusively for girls who were healthy children of leprosy patients with the donation from the Government of Netherlands and Prince Mukarrham Jah.

Messrs Misereor and Zentralstalle of West Germany funded the construction of ULCP administrative block, residential school for leprosy affected children, old age ladies ward and the T.B ward.

The mechanical workshop and the administrative block were inaugurated by Swami Chidananda on 24 Jan1990.

A new Leprosy ward, called the 'Twilight ward' was inaugurated by Prince Muffakam Jah.

The GLRA sanctioned the construction of accommodation for two medical officers, which was completed in the same year.

Project Concern International - an American volunteer organization, provided a grant for detection of leprosy among school children and spreading of awareness of HIV/ AIDS for the senior class children.

The government of Andhra Pradesh entrusted SRH to undertake a pilot project for tuberculosis control. The Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS) programme started in the year 1998, covering a population of 0.5 million people in Hyderabad and was undertaken for 5 years, with financial assistance from the Department for International Development, Govt. of UK and WHO.

A microscopic center covering a population of 50,000 for direct sputum testing was started for two years.

SRH worked in collaboration with the Government of India, under the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme to detect and treat sputum positive patients. Under the RNTCP (Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme) a tuberculosis unit covering 0.5 million rural and semi urban population had been taken up to control the spread of tuberculosis.

With a vision to improve and provide good quality of life to the HIV affected children, an orphanage was started in October 2005. The orphanage started with 20 children providing them with health care, education and other facilities. Emphasis is given on nutrition, immediate attention to opportunistic infection and a pleasant physical environment.

In partnership with Andhra Pradesh AIDS Control Society, SRH started a Care And Support Center Care, later called Community Care Center (CCC), with an aim to treat adult HIV/AIDS patients for opportunistic diseases.

SRH also established as a nodal center, for the DPMR (Deformity Prevention and Medical Rehabilitation) covering 6 districts in Andhra Pradesh. Dr. August Beine was elected as the chairman of RCS implementation committee.

A PPTCT (Prevention Of Parent To Child Transmission) of HIV/Aids, a programme covering a rural population of one million people spread across a large area, was started with an objective to bring down transmission of infection in new born to zero.

Live broadcast programme on SRH activities, including a cultural programme with children was aired by FM Rainbow 101.9, All India Radio.

State TB Control Society, Directorate of Health, Hyderabad gave away the appreciation awards under RNTCP to the staff members for effectively participating in the DOTS programme. From Sivananda Rehabilitation Home Dr.Somanna, Medical Officer & Ms.Claramma Verghese, STLS received the awards on the occasion of ''World TB Day''.

Birth Centenary of Mrs.J.Kumudini Devi, Founder, SRH was celebrated on 23 Jan 2011. A documentary on her life was shown. The foundation stone of new OPD Block at Ramdevrao Hospital was unveiled on this occasion by the Chief Guest, Dr.P.V.Ramesh Principal Secretary, Govt. of AP. Dr. August Otto Beine, Chief Medical Officer and Dr. P. Hrishikesh, Chief Administrator of the SRH were felicitated. His Highness Prince Muffakham Jha and Princess Esin, Dr.Prashanth Mahapatra, Mr.T.L.Shankar, Dr.Jayaprakash Narayan, MLA, Kukatpally were present. Members of the Governing Body and General Body and others also attended the programme.

'The out patient block at the Ramdevrao Hospital was inaugurated  by the Chief Guest Shri.M.T.Krishna Babu, Commissioner, GHMC on 01 Jul 2012. On the same day, ''Bhagwan Mahavir Dialysis Center'' located in the OPD Block, Ramdevrao Hospital was also inaugurated by Shri.Ramprakash Bansal family and Shri Surajmal Mangalchand Choudhari and their families. The dialysis center was sponsored and managed by Bhagwan Mahavir Jain Relief Foundation Trust.

Community Care Center for adults with HIV/AIDS closed down since National AIDS Control Organisation had withdrawn financial support to all such Centers in the Country.

The Children's Home closed down since National AIDS Control Organisation had withdrawn financial support to all such Centres in the Country.

Opening of 24 bedded Dialysis Centre on 2nd Floor of Ramdev Hospital run by the Bhagwan Mahavir Jain Dialysis Foundation Trust.

A new block was opened with wards for Male, Female and Pediatric in-patient.

A MOU was signed with the Diabetes Research Centre to operate the Kumudini Devi Diabetes Research Centre.

Hyderabad Race Club Eye Centre was inaugurated by Hon?ble Governor of Telangana & A.P. Shri E.S.L.Narsimhan who was the Chief Guest. The objective of this Centre is to provide Eye Care facility to the poor and socially backward sections of the Society either at free of cost or at substantially subsidized cost.
